One Trick To Guarantee You Will Improve Your Life in 2012.
One of the first things I ask people when they come to me for life or business advice is what their goals are…. and it is absolutely astonishing the number of people who have no idea what they even want out of their own life. How does someone expect to achieve anything in life if they don’t even know what they are trying to achieve? As basic as it sounds, setting GOALS is one of the most important aspects of living a successful life.
We aren’t talking minor goals such as “I want to read more books this year”; rather, goals that revolve around working towards the path you want to take in your life. It’s important to understand that the term “successful” is completely relative based on each individual. This means that goals are relative based on your opinion of success. One person’s goal may be to find a significant other, get married, and start a happy family, while another person’s goal may be to start a multi-billion dollar empire and take over the world. The important thing to understand is that there is no right or wrong answer here, rather the real important issue is that you have goals in the first place.
Another important aspect of goal setting is bridging the gap between goals and dreams. If you’re dead broke, and your goal is to be worth $100million by the time you’re 30, then you need to realize that this type of drastic goal is going to require goals within your goal. For these lofty goals, set a game plan to get to your first million, then first 25million, then 50mil+, etc. Do your research and realize that in order to achieve a level this high, you are going to need significant stake in something that changes a major industry quite drastically. Sure, every single person you tell this goal to is going to doubt you (why wouldn’t they?), however there are tons of people who worth over $100million, and they all got there by setting this very goal. Don’t let other people influence your goals. You control your own destiny, and other’s opinions mean absolutely nothing unless you think it does. I often keep my goals to myself simply because there is no room for doubt. You can and will achieve whatever you are truly passionate about.
Perhaps the most important reason why spending the time to set goals is so important is because you will find yourself with something to live for. You will see direction in your life, and are always working towards an objective. When you have this nonstop agenda on your mind it helps mold your mindset in a positive direction. You will find that your outlook on life will be much more positive, and every mini step you accomplish has an euphoric feeling associated with it. I often use the analogy that your life almost becomes a challenge revolving around your goal, and you become obsessive over winning this challenge. The difference is the end result of achieving that goal is far more powerful and self-satisfying than winning a normal challenge could ever be.
Reflection is key. I’m my biggest critic, but also my biggest fan. If you mess up, realize that you messed up, figure out what you did wrong and learn from it. Ignorance is the biggest form of stupidity. If you did something great, take some time to pat yourself on the back and feel good about yourself. Give advice and help others in similar situations. You are not only doing a good deed but are indirectly reflecting on your own experiences in order to help someone else.
If you are having a hard time coming up with goals for yourself, then go take some time alone, and get to know yourself a little better. What makes you tick? What do you truly care about in life? How can you leverage something you have a high interest in and use it to work towards your goals?
2 hours a month… That is ALL it takes to set goals. Instead of watching that TV show, or talking to a friend on the phone about absolutely nothing, allocate some time to yourself to truly think about what you want out of your life, and the steps it takes to get there. Once you know what you want, reflect on your goal often, and ask yourself did you get any closer to your goal today. You only have a limited time on this Earth, and the clock is ticking, so stop wasting time, get off your ass and strive to reach your full potential.
